Red River Gorge

Nestled in the lush Daniel Boone National Forest lies the wild Red River Gorge Geological Area. The Red River Gorge is an intricate canyon system featuring a perfect blend of sandstone cliffs, rock shelters, waterfalls, natural bridges and lush woodland. (Fun fact: There are more than 100 natural sandstone arches in the Red River Gorge Geological Area!) The Red River Gorge spans at around 29,000 acres; which has been designated as a National Natural Landmark and National Geological Area where cliffs soar up to 200 feet high! Within the geological area, 13,000 acres are also designated as Clifty Wilderness, adding further protection to some of Kentucky’s rarest flora and fauna. The white-haired goldenrod specifically is endemic to the Red River Gorge, occurring nowhere else in the world.

In case we aren’t making ourselves clear enough – Red River Gorge is the Holy Grail of outdoor recreation and adventure! (The small town of Slade is even considered to be the ‘Adventure Capital Of Kentucky’.) What truly makes Red River Gorge so special is that there is something here for everyone. The rapid growth of hiking and rock climbing’s popularity in the area can make it seem like they’re the only attractions available – but trust us, the fun doesn’t stop there. It can be easy to get overwhelmed with the must see’s and must do’s during your short time here. StayOver is locally operated and can help make the best out of your vacation! Below you will find your very own ‘Red River Gorge Guide’. We will be diving into some of our favorite businesses, activities, favorite hiking trails and more!
