Best Dog-Friendly Hikes in Red River Gorge

Shorter, dog-friendly Red River Gorge hikes, leash rules and trail safety tips, plus pet-friendly cabins near the trailheads.

Red River Gorge is one of Kentucky's best places to hike with a dog. Dogs are allowed on trails in the Red River Gorge Geological Area and at Natural Bridge State Resort Park, as long as they stay on a leash. Here are a few good places to start.

    Sky Bridge Loop

A short, mostly easy loop that crosses the top of a natural arch. It's busy on weekends, so go early and keep your dog close near the edges.

    Chimney Top Rock

A short walk to one of the best overlooks in the Gorge. The final viewpoint sits above sheer cliffs, so keep the leash short.

    Whittleton Arch

A shaded creekside trail near Natural Bridge that stays cooler on summer days. Expect some rocks and roots along the way.

    Natural Bridge Original Trail

Steep with lots of stairs, but short. Fit dogs handle it well; older dogs may prefer a gentler ridge walk.

    Trail tips for dogs

    • Bring more water than you think you need.
    • Avoid exposed sandstone in midday summer heat.
    • Check for ticks and burrs after every hike.
    • Pack out all waste.
    • Skip routes with ladders or scrambles.

Trail conditions and rules change, so check the Forest Service and park pages before you go. For more planning help, read our pet-friendly Red River Gorge guide or the top 10 Red River Gorge trails.
